I cannot let you go my sons
My heart breaks that you might leave me
I wake at night and hear the guns
And wonder if I'll live to see thee.
My sons are men they have to leave
My heart it breaks in parts
Just because the sin we weave
This war tears mothers hearts.
I wait for news of blackness
My days get longer in fear
My sons they showed no weakness
When the battle cry they hear.
My heart continues breaking
My head can take no more
I cannot stop the shaking
I cannot stop this war.
I pray amongst the stillness
That God may my sons save
But if he chooses bleakness
I ask they both be brave.
The country can't do without them
But a mother has to do
When the King says he needs them
We have to let them go.
My life is all but ended
My prayer is for my boys
My hope is that they are mended
To bring forth endless joys.
They know I have departed
And onwards they should march
Do not be broken hearted
though they go on to their death.
But death it couldn't part us
They sacrificed their rest
God in His kindest wisdom
Decided what was best.
My sons they never leave me
They were heroes till the last
My sons were as brave as can be
And now their war is past.
My sons gave the greatest sacrifice
That others might have no strife
They wanted to know that others could live
After they had given their lives.
My heart breaks that you might leave me
I wake at night and hear the guns
And wonder if I'll live to see thee.
My sons are men they have to leave
My heart it breaks in parts
Just because the sin we weave
